I used to be a big fan but I wish they’d broken up after Automatic for the People and that was years ago. They’ve made great videos since then but hardly any great songs…
You probably know this but http://www.salon.com do a downloadable song of the day podcast which is tops in my book.
Man, I forgot how much I love this song. Also, Simon, I agree REM’s way less interesting since Automatic, but if you’re willing to cherry pick, you’ll actually find some of their most interesting songs have been since then. Imitation of Life, for example, is unbelievably good. Also, So Fast, So Numb from Monster. Or hell, Let Me In, for that matter.
Hey, few people have probably heard this, but Stipe’s live solo version of The Last Day of Our Acquaintance, by Sinead O’Connor is heartbreakingly beautiful.

You can’t go wrong with a song whose opening lyrics are:
“yeah, all those stars drip down like butter,
and promises are sweet,
we hold out our pans with our hands to catch them.
we eat them up, drink them up, up, up, up”
Thanks for the suggestions JR. See, this is why I like you. We’re like freaking musical twins or something. It’s sick. and sexy. sick and sexy.

I am way cooler than salon.com’s stupid song of the day podcast. COME ON SIMON YOU KNOW THIS.
