the hits keep coming.
This morning I read two disturbing news items. One, ESPN is not renewing its broadcast rights for the NHL next season. Great. Lovely. Just terrific. ESPN may negotiate a cheaper deal for next year, but the one they had in place was shitty to begin with, with barely any games being aired. hmpf. I don’t understand why more people aren’t interested in hockey, especially sports fans. It’s a much more athletic and skilled game than any other sport. I hear grumblings from hockey fans in Canada that maybe hockey will return to Canada finally, “where it belongs” and I just want to smack them. How about someone tell me the number of players who take their paycheck in Canadian dollars? Hockey doesn’t “belong” anywhere, you morons. You don’t own the exclusive rights to hockey fandom. You wouldn’t have any better luck there than here. I hope that this turns out well, that they reorganize the league and drop some of the unnecessary teams (I hate to say it, but there just isn’t a big market here in Arizona for hockey, so maybe the Coyotes should be on the chopping block). Maybe they can arrange better deals where hockey IS popular. In Boston, we got to watch every single Bruins game, and maybe they can make some sort of TV deal that shows more games in the Northeast and other areas where hockey is appreciated. But I doubt it, because the NHL is full of a bunch of jackasses and it seems no one wants to do the smart, fair thing here.
Two, it is extremely likely that Rehnquist will be retiring soon and President Bonehead will get to select the new justice. Great. Lovely. Just terrific. They say Rehnquist is very politically savvy and that no time is more perfect than right now, politically speaking, for him to retire. This really irks me. When it comes to justice and law, I really think we need to leave the politics out of it. I understand that is difficult to do sometimes for us average citizens, especially on hot-button issues, but we’re talking about the highest court in America, the brightest minds, the best of the best. If they can’t leave their political biases behind, there’s no hope for the rest of us.
It all makes me so angry that I can barely function.
So we’re screwed. Hockey’s screwed, the justice system is screwed, democrats are screwed, the fans are screwed. we’re all just screwed.
When will anything good ever happen?
- be still my heart.
- I’m a mom now.
“When it comes to justice and law, I really think we need to leave the politics out of it.”
… *rewind* …
“[…] it is extremely likely that Rehnquist will be retiring soon and President Bonehead will get to select the new justice. Great. Lovely. Just terrific.”
You could have just said, “…I really think that we need to leave politics out of it and let the Democrats rule uncontested.” At least that would have been a little more intellectually honest. :)
Yikes!!!
or I could just say that the democrats seem to be the only ones who care about some semblance of fairness in law, whereas the republicans have a personal Christian-based agenda to push.
If the Republicans wanted to leave their religious morality out of it, I’d have no problem with them. For all their yammering about less government interference in the lives of citizens, they seem hell bent on making sure they are involved in the personal decisions of just about every American, making laws about things that are none of their business.
But this has nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans or politics, it has to do with the top lawmakers and enforcers deciding whether or not I have the right to have an abortion or marry someone of the same sex, which I guarantee will be affected as soon as Bush gets to nominate a new Justice.
And if you want to talk about ruling uncontested, how about taking a look at the Republican-controlled executive, legislative and soon to be judicial branches. If you call that a solid case for checks and balances then you’re fucking crazy. And if you suggest that this is the way Americans voted, therefore it’s what they want, I’ll tell you that’s bullshit and that even if it weren’t, America is full of a bunch of idiots who can’t be trusted to ruin their own lives much less a country.
If Bush wanted to nominate a moderate Justice who understood the true separation of church and state, I’d eat my words and lick the feet of every Republican I know. But he’d no sooner do that than I’d lick the feet of every Republican I know.
So again, I repeat. We’re all screwed.
Make the populace work harder and harder, remove the environment where one feels even remotely connected to the strings that control their destiny, and do it slowly and quietly but speak loudly and endlessly spewing lies about values, jobs and caring about savings and retirement and a functional health care system.
Oh wait, they dont even bother talking about those issues, because for many they are now irretrievably lost.
For the next three years they have won. There’s not much one can do unless you want to become a radical activist.
Its hard to wait that long when you are young. Being older one merely has to adapt, and soldier on.
Here’s an interesting thought I had earlier today… Humans are the only SELF-domesticated animals. All other domesticated animals were domesticated by us, but we domesticated ourselves.
Its possible that we co-domesticated ourselves with the dog and wolfpack as models. Thats what some anthropologists believe.
Really?? That I didn’t know, and I studied human origins pretty heavily for a few quarters. Mostly the rise and dominance of european society throughout the world (as in, why them as opposed to other civilizations.) Interesting stuff though.
I read it somewhere, anywhoo, Yesterday I became a great uncle. Harper Lynn Tran was born to the world. If you remember Amandas baby shower last week. The baby is half Vietnamese, a good part Irish, and other European nationalities and a tiny fraction american indian. She has dark curly hair. I cant wait to get pictures.
